Poster Contest Guidelines
Important Information Regarding Poster Contest Deadlines
Your students winning poster(s) should be sent to the Contest coordinator by March 30, 2009. Winners will be announced at the SouthLA EarthDay event, Saturday April 18, 2009. |
Criteria for Poster Submissions
The California Greenworks, Inc. local office has set the following criteria for poster submissions. Please be sure to go over these with your students to ensure compliance and avoid disqualification. |

All entries must be original works without aid from others. |

Posters must incorporate creative and original artwork and ideas. Depictions of cartoon, video game, and movie/television characters; celebrities; movie themes; and past poster designs does not constitute creativity and originality. |
 |
Posters must deliver a clear and positive message about the desired environmental message. Death themes and art displaying negative health consequences (i.e., coffins, people dying, etc.) are not considered positive messages. |
 |
Posters must be no larger than standard poster board size (22" x 28") and no smaller than 9" x 12". |
 |
Posters should not be laminated or mounted on mat board. Also, do not staple, glue, or tape entry forms to the backs of posters. |
 |
Ask students to refrain from writing their name or other identifying information on the front of their poster. Poster contest entry numbers should not be marked on the fronts of posters either. |
 |
Students may use a variety of media, such as watercolor, pen and ink, crayon, chalk, markers, etc. |
 |
Computer clip art, pictures from magazines and other print media, or any other copyrighted brand or product images will not be accepted. |
 |
Students may not work in pairs. |
 |
Failure to comply with the guidelines could result in a disqualification of the poster. |

Judging
Posters should be judged on their artistry, creativity, originality, and their ability to communicate a clear and positive message regarding pollution prevention, global warming, and recycling. Posters should also be judged on their compliance with the criteria listed above. |

| FREE STUDENT POETRY, ESSAY & ORATORICAL |
CONTEST OFFICIAL RULES
Eligibility: The Student Poetry Contest is open to all students enrolled in grades K-12 (including home schooled and tutored children), regardless of experience or previous publication, except where prohibited. Employees and agents of California Greenworks, Inc., and their immediate families are ineligible and may not enter. Each entrant may submit poetry (1 page or less), an essay (3 pages or 500 words). The theme is about Earth Day, and may include thoughts on the environment, global warming, recycling, or any other environmental issue. The work can be in any form, provided that the content is not vulgar, offensive, and does not employ profanity. It must be the original, individual work of the entrant. All submissions become the property of California Greenworks, Inc. Entrants retain copyright on his/her own individual work. Submissions by multiple entrants may be mailed together in one package to save on postage.
All entries sent by mail must include completed entry form.
Entrants must complete the entry form in its entirety to qualify for the contest and may submit no more than one poem per contest. |
| Contest Dates: Deadline for all entries is Saturday, April 18, 2009, 10:00 a.m. All entries can be submitted to the registration booth at the South L. A. Earthday Festival (the day of the festival). |
| Selection: All entries will be judged based on originality, creativity, and artistic quality. |
| Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are selected in each of four divisions (Division 1 - Grades K-2, Division 2 - Grades 3-5, Division 3 - Grades 6-9, and Division 4 - Grades 10-12). Each winner will receive a $50.00 American Express Gift Card. Prizes are also awarded by random drawing, based on participation and not artistic ability, to encourage all children to pursue literary endeavors. In the event of a tie, duplicate prizes will be distributed. |
| Decisions: The panel of judges consists of members of the South Los Angeles Community. All decisions made by the judges are final. |
| Fees: There are no entry fees for any of the contests. No purchase necessary. No financial obligation to enter or win the contests. |
| Copyrights: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted poem. Winning poems will appear on this website with the copyright notice intact and may be considered for publication in a forth coming anthology. |
| Notification: Winners will be announced Saturday April 18, 2009 during the South L.A. Earth Day Festival. |
| Privacy Policy: California Greenworks, Inc. collects personal information for the purpose of notifying contest winners. All information submitted is kept in confidence and used solely for notification purposes and shall not be made public by California Greenworks, Inc. California Greenworks, Inc. does not lease, lend, sell, or share personal information collected. Minor children must have parental permission to enter the contest.
